The Ensembles

The New York City Children’s Chorus offers eight different programs organized by age levels: two levels of In Harmony for grades 8-12 (changed voices and changing voices), Concert Choir for grades 6-8 (treble voices), and five Training Choirs from grades K-5.

In Harmony Rehearsals:

Sunday: 5:30-7:00 pm plus three additional rehearsals per season on Thursdays, 7- 8:15 pm

In Harmony

Grades 10-12

Young singers in grades 10-12 may audition for the high school choir, In Harmony, an outstanding ensemble that sings changed voice SATB repertoire. Performances for this choir include an annual collaboration with maestro Andrew Henderson on MAPC’s Music on Madison series to present classical masterworks such as Faure’s Requiem, Saint-Saen’s Christmas Oratorio, Copland’s Promise of Living or Mozart’s Requiem. Each season, In Harmony will present several concerts which will include repertoire from Renaissance Madrigals to Broadway musicals.

  • • Rehearse once per week, September through May (90 minutes)
    • SATB repertoire from Bach to Broadway to Glee!
    • Perform one large-scale work each year with professional soloists & orchestra
    • Perform in NYCCC Spring Concert on MAPC’s Music on Madison series
    • Perform with professional soloists and instrumentalists for MAPC’s Carol Sing
    • Tours to local, national, and international destinations
    • Optional Voice Lessons

Grades 7-9

Children in grades 7-9 may audition for this advanced ensemble with treble voices and changing male voices which performs several concerts throughout the season including an annual collaboration with maestro Andrew Henderson on MAPC’s Music on Madison series to present classical masterworks such as Fauré’s Requiem or J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. The choir performs on the annual MAPC Carol Sing, as well as several concerts in various venues in the metropolitan NYC area.

Grades 5-8

Children in grades 6-8 may audition for this advanced treble ensemble which performs several concerts throughout the season including an annual collaboration with maestro Andrew Henderson on MAPC’s Music on Madison series to present classical masterworks such as Fauré’s Requiem or J.S. Training Choirs

Choristers in grades K-5 may sing in one of the five training choirs of the New York City Children’s Chorus. These training choirs prepare children to audition for the advanced ensembles, Concert Choir and In Harmony. The training choirs present two formal concerts annually as well as two outreach concerts in the community. Children in the training choirs spend time honing their vocal technique, refining their choral blend, and developing their music reading skills.

Allegro Training Choir I - Grades 4-5

  • • Rehearse once per week, September through May (75 minutes)
    • Treble Choir repertoire from Bach to Broadway!
    • Perform in Training Choir Concert in November and Spring Concert in May
    • Community Outreach Appearances (approximately 2 per year)

Intermezzo Training Choir II - Grades 3-4

  • • Rehearse once per week, September through May (60 minutes)
    • Treble Choir repertoire from Bach to Broadway!
    • Perform in Training Choir Concert in November and Spring Concert in May
    • Community Outreach Appearances (approximately 2 per year)

Prelude Training Choir III - IV- Grades 1-2

  • • Rehearse once per week, September through May (60 minutes)
    • Treble Choir repertoire from Bach to Broadway!
    • Perform in Training Choir Concert in November and Spring Concert in May
    • Community Outreach Appearances (approximately 1-2 per year)

Minuet Training Choir V – Kindergarten

  • • Rehearse once per week, September through May (45 minutes)
    • Treble Choir repertoire
    • Focus on introductory vocal technique, music reading skills, musical games, and partner songs
    • Perform one winter concert and one spring concert
